Our lineage can be traced back to Pope St Silvestro of Rome and Great Britain circa 335AD. 

​

The Church of St Silvestro in Rome is alleged to be our family Church, and houses a relic of John The Baptist, the story of which was part of family folklore.

 

My father would always speak of this Church as housing the skull of the famous Saint, however when I visited the Church in May 2014 I discovered it to be just a fragment of the skull, I guess the legend got passed down from generation to generation like Chinese (or Italian) whispers.

Pope St Silvestro was the first Pope of Rome after allegedly "curing" the Pagan Emperor Constantine of leprosy, a disease that was common, but not able to be controlled by medicine at the time.

​

Constantine was so impressed with this feat that he renounced his Pagan upbringing, converted to Christianity and proclaimed Silvestro the "First Pope of Rome in England".

​

Pope Silvestro's name was anglicised to Sylvester, however in Italy it remained as the original Italian spelling of Silvestro. 

​

As the Pope of Rome and England, Sylvester was above Roman Law, and had a legion of the Roman Army at his disposal, which he promptly sent off to persecute the Jews in North Africa, and to add further grief to the Jewish Community he had the Sabbath Day changed from Saturday to Sunday. 

​

Michelangelo was commissioned to paint a picture of Pope Silvestro curing The Emperor and it is this painting that hangs over the Alter in the Church of San Silvestro in Capite Rome. (see above pic)
